Most of the time, with good concentration, Tray could convince himself that Leinani was just a friend. A really hot, no-touch friend. They had navigated to a perfect balance of distance and closeness to make the isolation bearable, and he could convince himself that safe, platonic fondness was the strongest of his real emotions for her.

But every once in a while, something would remind him that this amazing woman was going to marry his brother and rage and jealousy would swamp him.

He dreaded those moments, knowing that Leinani would pick them up as easily as if he’d said it all out loud, and he hated himself for making it worse for her.

“Sorry,” he said tightly as he turned off the tape player. “Sorry.”

When she lifted the ring to her ear and beckoned him to sit beside him, he did, still aching as he sat as far from her as he could and still hear.

They had missed some of the conversation.

“—I should know?” Amara was asking.

“This one has the activation word caramel,” her assistant said.

“Caramel?” Amara said skeptically.

“Daniel was hungry when he wrote this one. That kind of thing can leak over in very curious ways.” Mackenzie paused. “I would like to talk about giving them a little break. We’ve been going pretty hard with the stone, and we’re not really sure what kind of long term effects it might have.”

“They are resilient,” Amara said dismissively. “And they know what’s at stake. Are they actually complaining?”

“No,” Mackenzie said reluctantly. “But they wouldn’t.”

“Of course their best interests are in our heart,” Amara said, palpably turning on the charm. “You don’t think I’d want to harm them, do you?” She managed to sound hurt.

“No…”

“Have trust, my hand. Our time for victory is near, and we will need all of our warriors ready.”

Mackenzie’s silence was hard to interpret without visual cues.

“Have the prince brought in. Let’s see if we can get the effects to last longer this time. We’re more ready this time, we’ll do as much as we can with it.”

Leinani fumbled the ring in alarm and Tray automatically moved to catch it. Her reflexes were as good as his, and he ended up catching her hand instead of the ring, and then dropping it away at once.

They scrambled apart on the couch and stared at each other, the bond between them swirling in dismay and desire, and Leinani rather suddenly brought the ring to her ear as she remembered it. She slowly lowered it again and shook her head. “They’re gone.”

Then she looked at the door to their little hotel prison. “They’re coming for you again.” Her voice was calm and even; Tray knew very well that she was anything but behind her words.

Have the prince brought in...last longer this time.

If his dragon had possessed a separate body, Tray would have clung to it, remembering the horror of losing him the first time. Clinging to Leinani would have been almost as good, but twice as dangerous.

The only thing he could do was the thing he always did, make a joke of it.
